A nunatak forms when a glacier or ice sheet grows thick enough to cover most of a mountain, but not its highest summit. Many famous mountain landscapes contain nunataks. In Antarctica and Greenland, countless rocky peaks rise above immense ice sheets, creating spectacular scenery.
